Abstract

Measuring citizens’ quality of life has become a key challenge for economic development and fundamental to achieving social progress. Various approaches have been developed to assess quality of life, drawing on different perspectives—both subjective and objective—and using either unidimensional or multidimensional measurement strategies. This study proposes a new method for calculating a quality of life index that distinguishes between personal and social well-being. The proposed index is multidimensional in nature and focuses specifically on social quality of life. It is constructed using objective weights derived from ordinary least squares estimation. This new index is applied to data from Spanish regions, and the results are compared with other existing approaches within the geographical context under analysis. Due to the availability of relevant data in Spain, the model allows for the measurement of quality of life across different territorial units, as well as the estimation of an individual’s social quality of life score. This makes it possible to compare personal outcomes with the average levels observed among other citizens in the same area.

Once published, we will open a new section on the website so that, if you are a Spanish resident, you can calculate your Social Quality of Life. Here

ABSTRACT
ICRG en Plaza de Salamanca

Quality of life is an essential factor for economic and social development, and tourism can significantly contribute to its improvement. However, the relationship between tourism and quality of life is not uniform; it depends both on the type of tourism practiced and on the sociodemographic characteristics of tourists. Therefore, it is crucial to identify which modalities generate greater well-being and how factors such as gender, age, marital status, income, educational level, employment situation, or sector of activity influence this relationship. This study analyses the impact of tourism on the quality of life of Spanish tourists, considering different types of tourism and personal profiles. The findings show that the perception of tourism as a driver of quality of life varies according to individual characteristics, highlighting the need to design tourism policies tailored to the needs of each population segment to achieve a more inclusive and satisfactory tourism experience.

KEYWORD: tourism, quality of life, tourists, sociodemographic factors.
